Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a speech-language pathologist who provides related services to approximately 50 students with varying learning needs in a high school in an urban district. The needs range from moderate to severe deficits include significant cognitive impairments, communication impairments, physical limitations, social/behavioral deficits, and visual impairments. Our students attend school in-person full-time, in cohorts as well as a number of students who have chosen to attend school as distance learners. Meeting the varying needs has been challenging this year.
With schools being mandated to close last year, there was no way to provide closure and transition some of our highest-needs students in a way that was meaningful for them.
The materials purchased through this project would provide our students with a fun, interactive, social event that would celebrate their individual successes and provide closure and recognition for those students transitioning to vocational programs.
My Project
The t-shirts and party-ware will be used to celebrate our students' successes this school year in a fun, interactive, and engaging way. The students will work together to plan and create their celebration including invitations, menu, and creating their own t-shirt representing their own uniqueness. Our end-of-the-year celebration will also be used to help provide closure for those students transitioning to other vocational training programs in the community. Our students have significant special needs and they often struggle with transitions and changes. As many students around the world have experienced this past year, providing meaningful, rich, social experiences has been challenging. We want to help our students by providing them a way to celebrate their individual accomplishments in a meaningful manner as well as provide closure as some transition.
