My Students

Our elementary school is an urban school in Salt Lake City with a socioeconomically and racially diverse population of students, Pre-K through 6th grade. Over 80% of Washington Stars are from low socioeconomic backgrounds, nearly 20% are English Language Learners and close to 60% are ethnic minorities. Many students lack extracurricular enrichment opportunities but this does not restrict their enthusiasm for learning.

As students say each day in school greeting: "Washington Stars are persons of value!" Value means: Vision, Academic Attitude, Love of Learning, Understanding, and Excited to be here!

We want to be sure our students know that anything is possible and we are here to support and guide them on their learning journey.

My Project

As we know, all students have different talents and strengths, but unfortunately, some students never have the opportunity to explore those unique talents.

We want to give students opportunities to try new things, create, inquire, explore, and collaborate with others in order to create meaning for themselves to become lifelong learners.

Students will be using these materials in weekly Makerspace activities in the library. Mrs. Gleason will guide student learning and connect lessons and activities with literature and real life situations to engage students in hands on learning.

Examples; LEGO bricks, origami, robotics, crafts, marble runs, puzzles, technology, art, poetry, problem solving challenges.
