At our library, we strive to promote lifelong learning through an environment of exploration where students and staff have access to multiple media resources. Our goal is to engage all learners in reading, creating and exploring the world of literacy and technology through quality instruction. The addition of a "makerspace" for students to build, create, and investigate will extend their learning of core curriculum concepts. A "makerspace" is a designated area of the library for STEAM materials that connect kinesthetic activities with literature to teach the core curriculum. For example, in third grade, students learn about simple machines. We could use the "Simple and Powered Machines" LEGO kit along with books like, All About Pulleys, by James De Medeiros, to teach these concepts. After reading stories in the library each week, students at every grade level will be given different challenges to explore STEAM related topics. LEGO kits are the perfect "jumping off" point for us as we begin to create our first Makerspace opportunity in our library.
