So far, we have used the train sets and the STEM kits. The students love them! We begin each session by generating questions to be answered and problems to be solved and then the students experiment in partnerships or small groups to find answers and solutions. \r\n\r\nThe STEM kits have proven to be very challenging for students. They are assembling various battery-powered vehicles and they are finding that they will get the whole thing put together and the battery is hot, but there is no movement in the propeller (for example). They are frequently needing to take things apart and put them back together again. Yesterday, I heard a student say to his partner, \"This is hard!\" and his partner responded, \"Yeah, but we never give up.\" I anticipated this challenging their thinking, but I did not anticipate it teaching them so much stamina and determination as well. \r\n\r\nThe trains have been a little easier to operate since the only assembly is of the track, but it's been very fun for students to experiment with the coding of the track to try to get the train to act in the way they want it to (including things like what speeds and angles make the train fly off the track, how steep of an incline it can climb, and how to get it to make certain stops). They often have disagreements about what should be done, so the bonus life lessons have been about how to respectfully disagree, how to compromise, and how to build on each other's ideas. \r\n\r\nWe so appreciate the opportunity to play with scientific and mathematical thinking in a way that is so engaging and fun. The line to use the cutter is usually 5-6 deep. I feel like we could have 20 of them and they'd still be constantly running. The fifth graders made 3d initials with it and it was so handy for the tight spots like the hole in the \"A.\" The sixth graders are making original abstract art pieces, and the younger kids are constantly asking when they get a turn. I wish I had storage for every class to use it at the same time.\r\n\r\nI plan to use the cardboard screws to make houses and cars with the littler kids in the spring.
