Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of being the school librarian for two amazing schools on the same campus. The students I serve are English Language Learners, Newcomers and mostly low-income families. Our school is in the flatlands of Oakland, CA, and doesn't have many of the basic resources that many other schools have, such as computers or even a budget allocation for book purchases.

Our students love to read and love to find new and interesting books that we try to provide when we have funding.

Many of our families can't purchase books for their children, so the library is a crucial resource for reading enrichment. Many of our parents are English learners and benefit from reading library books and their children.

My Project

Putting books into the hands of our students will bring them joy and give them an even larger thirst for reading. Enriching their library with high-quality books helps them academically with their reading skills and comprehension. It shows them that people care about them and their education even though they are in flatlands school.

We have found when students bring library books home, their entire families are enriched, as their siblings and parents also read along, gaining English fluency and developing a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and learning.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
