My Project

Do you know the number one predictor of comprehension? Its isn't if students can read the words on the page or vocabulary knowledge. Its is background knowledge. I was once told that "1/2 of the curriculum walks through the door with your students." Wow! What an thought.

Because I teach a very diverse group of learners, it is imperative that I help build their background knowledge around topics that many are not familiar with.

This includes integrating read alouds that allow for them to learn about our upcoming unit around the Earth. In my experience, students struggle with enjoying and being engaged in non fiction text. Why? Well many do not have much background knowledge about what we are asking them to read/learn about.

For our upcoming unit titled Features, our essential question is: Why is it important to understand our planet? This project will provide read aloud texts that students can help students build their background knowledge and strength their understanding of our unit.
