Each day, my students, who live in poverty, are excited about our literacy block. The families in our community are great and value literacy. Due to the financial hardships many of our families face, the community has high expectations for school to expose children to high quality texts. My students love to read high interest texts and love to discuss the books they read. They are eager consumers of texts that relate to their real life struggles that include foster care, non traditional family life, hunger, and building relationships. My students connect with characters and realize they are not alone in their struggles. Many of my students come to my classroom as reluctant readers. Through working with meaningful and complex text, my students leave with an appreciation and love for high quality literature. They leave with an understanding that reading is instrumental to their future success in school and in their lives. I am passionate about fostering a love for reading.
