Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My creative, bright, and deserving 11th grade students have recently immigrated to the U.S. to pursue safer, more prosperous futures. 22% of students at OIHS are refugees who have escaped some of the world’s most violent and protracted conflicts. My students come from diverse countries including Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Yemen, Eritrea, Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan, and are learning English. For some students, access to education in their home countries was limited or denied. Our school is a full-service community school, which means we focus heavily on social and emotional wellness, providing and connecting families to essential resources.

I strive to create the best possible learning environment for my amazing students-- a welcoming space full of opportunities, supplies, and comfort.

After moving to OIHS and resettling in a new classroom, I'm trying to rebuild my classroom. I need your help to purchase some items to create a beautiful, organized learning environment.

My Project

Countless studies show that classroom setup significantly affects the quality of learning. When a classroom is organized, well-furnished, and plentiful with supplies and resources, students feel welcome and ready to learn. Some of the supplies I need are large shelves to organize student classroom supplies like art supplies, folders, and books. Shelving with compartments labeled in students' various home languages will bolster students' autonomy to easily and quickly use supplies for learning.

Generating a sense of calm, orderliness, and abundance in my classroom is especially critical for my students, many of whom escaped crisis and danger in their home countries.

This drives my motivation for building a space that emanates warmth, belonging, and the calm that comes from regularity and organization. With your help, I can build this oasis for learning.
