Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school contains 3 cluster classrooms with intellectually disabled students. As a general education First Grade teacher, I feel it is important to teach my students about these classrooms and how to interact with children who have different needs. Ultimately, I want my students to learn that people in general are more alike than different and to celebrate our differences. I hope to teach my students how to be more inclusive with everyone!

One of the books in this project, We're All Wonders, has the most beautiful line in it: Look with kindness and you will find wonder.

Isn't that beautiful? By looking with kindness, not fear or distaste, we can learn and grow! My students are only 6 and 7 years old which means they may not have been taught yet how to interact with people who have different needs. They must be explicitly taught how to interact gently with our special cluster students: Look, don't gape. Smile, don't frown. Wave, don't ignore. Invite, don't exclude.

The special education teacher in the younger cluster and I gathered many books about inclusion. I previewed them to find just the right ones for my young students. Before we conducted the actual lesson, I read books to prepare my students for the gathering. We worked together to create a lesson teaching inclusion. She brought her students into our classroom, and we did activities to show how much all of our students share in likes and dislikes. It was wonderful!

Since I plan to be at this school for a long time, I would like to own these books so that we can easily conduct this lesson every year. The lesson was so successful that the cluster teacher did it again for all 5 of our other First Grades c
