This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are similar in that they are all in elementary school and come from low-income homes. They also all have a disability or significant delay in their speech and/or language development. However, they are each unique in their skill sets, interests, and strengths. My job, as their teacher of speech improvement, is to ensure that each one learns strategies to help them communicate and learn to the best of their abilities.
Having a disability and limited resources can limit a child's ability to progress, learn, and succeed; however, the generosity of those more fortunate can make all the difference in the lives of my students.
Due to the range of my students' disabilities, it becomes necessary to obtain various types of resources that can best aid them in their speech and language skill-building. These resources, while necessary, can be pricey and unaffordable to children whose families have limited resources. I am therefore reaching out to those who are committed to the future and understand the significance of supporting those in need.
My Project
Books afford children endless opportunities. They allow children to learn about new places and people, expose them to new vocabulary and terms, and encourage critical thinking and higher order cognition.
Books are a lifeline and great equalizer for children who, like my students, come from immigrant or struggling homes with limited finances.
On behalf of my students, please grant them this opportunity to make reading a fun and easy experience so they can flourish in their learning. Increased reading will result in improved academics across the board giving them the educational boost that can propel them to success!
