Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the best part of my job, and I tell them that all the time. They are funny, kind, and resilient. They are even more resilient having lived through the COVID 19 pandemic for nearly 2 years now. They miss true, unafraid connection with their peers and teachers. They've had so many dreams and expectations stopped by the pandemic. They've even lost people they love, but we keep trying together.

My Project

As I type this, we are in another period of Remote Learning. I am at home and my students are at home protecting each other and our families from the virus. We are all trying to do the job of school individually. When we are all home like this, we miss the connection that being at school provides, and we miss the quality learning that happens when we are together.

Of utmost concern to me as their Language Arts teacher, is their reading improvement.

They are on the verge of going to high school, and they don't have time to spare. Research has shown that the best way to motivate kids to read in or out of the classroom is to let them choose what they want to read. But if they aren't surrounded by a wide range of all kinds of books, not all kids will have the book that they want to read. Without that practice, their reading ability will suffer.

I am building a classroom library of books from all genres, fiction and non fiction, that I can surround students with. I try to pick books that students can see themselves and their interests in. I talk about these books daily. I recommend them to students I think they fit. These are the books they take home and read, whether we have class in the building or not. I would love if I could add a few new ones to my shelves.
