We use the snacks and rewards to recognize students who demonstrate our classroom expectations, participate in Spanish, complete their work, or show perseverance when learning something difficult.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been seeing students encourage each other and celebrate one another's success. A small reward can be a powerful reminder that their effort matters. During independent work, speaking activities, and reading tasks, I have noticed students becoming more motivated to stay on task and finish their work. The rewards have also helped me create a positive classroom environment where students feel recognized for their growth—not just for getting the right answer.\r\n\r\nWe are continuing to use these resources throughout the year as students develop their Spanish communication and literacy skills. Our next steps include more reading, speaking, and collaborative activities where students will have opportunities to use Spanish in meaningful ways. I was incredibly sad to leave, but it was time for me to move into a new space to expand my teaching experience. As a last hurrah, I wanted to gift all of my 8th graders with a brand new book to take home with them over the summer to inspire personal reading. As an ELA teacher, you obviously wish for all of your students to become avid readers. Helping students find a book they felt connected with and excited to pick up was one of the more challenging parts of my job, though--there are many barriers and endless options for young children to get their dopamine from. It takes a lot of legwork to get a student excited about a long-term commitment like reading, and that's what it feels like to them: a long-term commitment that could come without a reward. For many, it feels more like a chore than anything. And, as a teacher, I could stand at the front of my classroom for days and days talking about books without succeeding in grabbing student's attention. \r\n\r\nA brand new, never read, modern book has a special way of attracting young readers, though. The shiny covers and the promise of the phrase \"it's yours\" ignited a kind of joy in my student's faces I had been trying to pull out of them all school year. Allowing a middle schooler pick a book of interest for themselves and keep it close to them is truly, in my experience, the best way to inspire reading outside of the classroom. \r\n\r\nIf ever you find yourself able, or find a person who is taking on the endeavor, always give children books. And let them pick one out. Tell them why you loved it. Find something they love and share it with them through literature. And let them keep a book for themselves. \r\n\r\nI hope to keep this tradition up for years and years to come.
