I was incredibly sad to leave, but it was time for me to move into a new space to expand my teaching experience. As a last hurrah, I wanted to gift all of my 8th graders with a brand new book to take home with them over the summer to inspire personal reading. As an ELA teacher, you obviously wish for all of your students to become avid readers. Helping students find a book they felt connected with and excited to pick up was one of the more challenging parts of my job, though--there are many barriers and endless options for young children to get their dopamine from. It takes a lot of legwork to get a student excited about a long-term commitment like reading, and that's what it feels like to them: a long-term commitment that could come without a reward. For many, it feels more like a chore than anything. And, as a teacher, I could stand at the front of my classroom for days and days talking about books without succeeding in grabbing student's attention. \r\n\r\nA brand new, never read, modern book has a special way of attracting young readers, though. The shiny covers and the promise of the phrase \"it's yours\" ignited a kind of joy in my student's faces I had been trying to pull out of them all school year. Allowing a middle schooler pick a book of interest for themselves and keep it close to them is truly, in my experience, the best way to inspire reading outside of the classroom. \r\n\r\nIf ever you find yourself able, or find a person who is taking on the endeavor, always give children books. And let them pick one out. Tell them why you loved it. Find something they love and share it with them through literature. And let them keep a book for themselves. \r\n\r\nI hope to keep this tradition up for years and years to come. Thank you for bringing my ambitious vision to life.","fullyFundedDate":1778179191688,"projectUrl":"project/brand-new-books-to-inspire-reading/10156192/","projectTitle":"Brand New Books to Inspire Reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bri","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9169581_orig.jpg?crop=3456,3456,x587,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1697082509327","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9169581"},{"teacherId":9169581,"projectId":10053768,"letterContent":"Though I am at a different school now, I was so grateful to everyone who shared and donated to support my Bryant students. Students scored INCREDIBLY last year (the best since I have started teaching) and part of that was success was due to immersing students in a less stressful environment. More snacks make testing less daunting.Their snacking also allowed them to focus on the test and not COMPLETELY dread it upon entering my classroom. Having snacks on hand even allowed me to lure some more hesitant students into the room to even sit down, which made my job immensely easier. Anytime teaching can be made easier, I'm all for it.
