As a career teacher, I know better than almost anyone that one of the most significant differences between students who succeed and students who struggle is reading proficiency. Reading is a skill that practically guarantees a students ability to go and do whatever they choose in the future. Many of my students need support as they come to realize that they do love reading....they just don't love it yet. Research shows that students engage with reading if they can choose what they read and and make meaningful connections. After attending a conference where I heard Penny Kittle present, I am on the verge of shifting my classroom instruction to allow students lots of access to books of their choice. In order to make this happen, I need lots and lots of books. Our library here is amazing, but it would be helpful to have a selection of books in my classroom as well. With these books, I can do daily book talks to help them find the right one. They will have time every day to read in my class. They will have monthly conversations with me and their peers about what they're reading. I even hope that as time passes, students will annotate in my classroom books allowing them to have conversations with each other in their pages.
