Due to Covid 19, my students are starting the school year with remote learning. Since they are struggling readers, I want to engage them in a high interest graphic novel that will spark great conversation about racial inequality. "New Kid" will be the first selection for our school-wide book club. Our book club will meet weekly on Zoom in order to discuss this award winning story about a student who feels out of place at his new school. I believe that our online book club will encourage independent reading, get students talking about a current topic facing our community and nation, and help them socialize with other students.
