After School Alignment and Engagement

My Project

Did you know that three quarters of third grade students who are considered low readers are unlikely to graduate from high school? Did you also know that poorly developed word recognition skills are the most debilitating source of long term reading challenges? It's difficult to hear this information but there is also very promising research that states that systematic literacy intervention can dramatically impact student word recognition and fluency skills and that a part of this intervention is through repeated and structured practice!

I work at a Title I school in Seattle with some students who live in our nearby family shelter and who also attend the after school programming there and at our school on site.

The after school programming staff at these sites are looking to collaboratively implement useful activities for their students to support their learning. I am helping them to utilize activities that directly connect to the skills they are learning in class, especially in their reading intervention groups.

This project is geared towards supporting 2nd and 3rd graders who are struggling to learn to read. Now is a time to provide the structured practice we can to ensure they have lots of opportunities to review and showcase their reading, spelling and fluency skills, while feeling empowered and confident in all areas of their lives! Included in this project are engaging workbooks that allow for direct practice of skills introduced in reading group, decodable books to practice these skills with new characters and stories, and small prizes to honor their work completed in their after school program's Power Hour several times a week. Thank you for your support of our collaboration to engage these wonderful, hardworking and fun-loving children to practice skills and accelerate reading growth this winter.
