My Kindergarten and First Grade students don't yet know all their letter names but they will soon! They benefit from systematic, multi-sensory activities that support the swift and secure knowledge of foundational phonics and phonological awareness skills in order to meet their grade level standards. Opportunities to write in sand and on plastic boards, form letters with wikki sticks, water and paint pens will provide my students with opportunities to engage in multi-sensory activities in school and at home and make learning memorable. Systematic phonics instruction promotes social change. Research tells us there is a strong correlation between letter naming and letter formation skills in the primary years with reading comprehension skills in the intermediate years. It is my responsibility as a reading interventionist for our younger learners, especially those impacted by systematic racism, homelessness and food insecurity, to ensure that my students acquire these foundational reading skills in order to become strong, confident and critical readers. There is no time to waste. Help make learning memorable, at home and in school.
