This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever read the book "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse?" We have! Lilly is a colorful character, created by Author/Illustrator Kevin Henkes. She goes on many interesting and heart-warming adventures and has many other adorable animal friends. This year, we have started our Awesome Author and Interesting Illustrator studies in my Special Education classroom. These in-depth studies have really inspired my Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders to create their own illustrations and story books. We have found more meaning in the stories offered by the authors and illustrators and have found our own inspiration to create wonderful adventures on the page! When you find out about the person who is creating your favorite story books, you feel like you know them on a more personal level. You may be able to guess why the characters act in a certain way, or even how the person gained inspiration for painting those characters, based upon their own life experiences. As you know, children with special needs often require a multi-sensory approach in order to learn and retain concepts. Through the use of picture story books, the internet, our previous life experiences and some great art supplies, my children have been able to proudly assemble a set of their own story books. We learn about how the main characters, such as Lilly, speak to us and how we have similar life stories. Kids are hilarious when given the opportunity to re-tell their lives! The books by Kevin Henkes are also very humorous, lesson-teaching and applicable to my specific group of children. We would like to request a classroom library of his works, all the way from "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" to "Julius, Baby of the World". Please help us become better thinkers, writers, illustrators and friends to one another. These and many other important lessons will be taught using this library of Kevein Henkes stories.
