A Green Garden Starts With Bugs

My students need a digital microscope to help identify the garden bugs.

My Students

The vegetable garden is moving! Of course it is! But, it's really moving due to all of the little friends and not so friendly bugs that come to feast on the natural bounty.

We are growing vegetables in our school garden plots.

Our public school students are still unsure about where their food comes from (except chips - they come from the bags that are always flying around campus). Most students still eat fully processed foods and rarely have fresh foods in their meals.

My Project

We are going to show them the circle of life that occurs in a garden with a digital microscope. The students will grow the plants from seeds and study the insects that make a great contribution or great lack of contribution to their food. They will capture the insects and bring them back to the classroom to identify and study their forms. This process will help them better understand how the insects survive and feed in the gardens. We will then release them back into their world.

Students will use a digital microscope to take close up pictures of the bugs structures so they can compare the forms of pests and predators in the bug world.

They will become captivated by the images and truly understand how these common animals play an important part of our natural world.
