Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hard-working inner-city high school students. Many of them are immigrants from Central America, South America, and Cape Verde.

My students bring positivity, light, and unique experiences to the classroom and they deserve much more than what they are getting right now.

Because we are part of an urban school district, we don't have enough resources to provide our students with the same level of academic enrichment as other schools may. I usually pay out of pocket for any materials that I need for my class.

My Project

Abandoned buildings, impervious surfaces, and brownfield sites are common in Central Falls. As a result, the health and safety of the community are severely impacted. For example, when it rains the streets become flooded with excess water that cannot be handled by the existing infrastructure. Additionally, the impacts of these abandoned areas add to the disproportionate health outcomes seen in Central Falls.

Students will design solutions to these problems, utilizing green design elements, and these designs will inform local stakeholders about the potential modifications that can be made, and hopefully lead to long term positive impacts in the community.

Depending on the availability of funding and property, students may have a chance to be involved in the creation of a new green space in the city. Students will also become advocates for environmental justice, and be able to apply what they have learned to other aspects of our community. The tools and skills students will develop will allow them to continue to make beneficial changes in the community.
