My students are currently engaging in One Piece. During this novel we explore the questions pertaining to the study of graphic novels. In particular we focus on how the medium evokes emotion and what elements make graphic novels unique. We use this book as platform because it is high interest and represents the LGBTQ community that is often under represented.\r\n\r\nWe will engage in meaningful conversations about historical context with MAUS and They Called Us Enemy. During these reading we will talk about identity and how a setting can affect a character's choices. These texts both convey a meaningful message in a very accessible way. \r\n\r\nI find that students are able to understand tone, mood, and big concepts better with the visual effects available through the graphic novel. Students are able to read and comprehend material much more independently. They are excited to read and write about these texts because they are less dense with text. My multilingual learners and IEP students benefit the most from these visual cues and are more engaged than ever. Once we begin our units we will start showcasing the amazing work the students are completing. Turning off the harsh overhead lights and working under the softer glow has helped students stay more relaxed and focused. One student who usually struggles to sit still said, \"It's easier to read like this.\" That was a big win for me.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're in the middle of a unit on character study, where students are creating charts and group posters. The new lighting has made those small group discussions feel less formal and more inviting.
