Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Create lifelong memories for my class by sending us to Grand Canyon National Park. This natural wonder is Arizona's major attraction, but we cannot experience its unique beauty without funding for transportation.

My students are amazing, enthusiastic, self-directed third graders at a Title 1 school.

Funding for field trips, even to local destinations, is nonexistent. Asking parents to donate money for the Grand Canyon field trip is unrealistic because of the cost limits the number of children able to attend.

My Project

Students will benefit from visiting Grand Canyon National Park by enhancing their understanding of science and how parks protect and preserve nature. During the summer months, I work for the National Park Service in a program that allows teachers to become park rangers. The TRT (Teacher-Ranger-Teacher) program has inspired me to develop curriculum-based lesson plans exploring the cultural, natural, and scientific heritage of the United States. Children will collaborate with classmates to research specific aspects of the park prior to the trip. On site they will utilize higher order thinking skills by speculating how the Grand Canyon would be different without the presence of water, hypothesizing how the absence or addition of an adaptation would change an animal, and pondering their own place in an endless chain of interrelationships. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the scientific process through their guided tour, ongoing discussions, and post-trip extension activities.

The ultimate goal of the Grand Canyon field trip is for students to gain a sense of environmental stewardship toward this unique natural wonder.

They will transfer this sense of duty and care to other environments and ultimately future generations. Engaging in inquiry based learning, understanding the scientific process, and teaching others about their findings are other significant objectives, which will create 21st century learners. Make this field trip a reality by funding our transportation.
