My Students

Do you remember the "old days" when students were not rewarded for good behavior? With our school's behavior initiative, PBIS, we like to offer our students an array of items from which to choose when cashing in their Bee Bucks. Books support this, as well as our commitment to literacy!

I teach in an urban school in New York.

All of our students are eligible for either free or reduced lunch. As part of our school's PBIS Committee, I believe that we should support good habits as well as good behavior. I have come to realize that many of our children do not have a home library as my own children were lucky enough to have as they were growing up. Many do not even have a library card!

My Project

Through PBIS, we encourage and reinforce the good behavior tenants of our program: Bee Safe, Bee Responsible, Bee Respectful. Students are given a bee buck when a teacher deems their behavior exceptional or when they go out of their way to be helpful. These students can then go to the Bee Buck store to buy items with their "bucks". Much of our inventory is donated as our budget is limited. At a recent meeting we discussed how it would be great to support the literacy cause in our school by offering books as incentives.

By supporting this project, you can have a direct effect on a child's self-esteem as well as contribute to their literacy.
