At this moment we have received 12 letters in return. This is not our goal, but we are very excited every time we get a letter. All of the responses have been so interesting. We have learned that we have many things in common with students in schools across the country, as well as many differences! We learned about many different types of rural, suburban and urban communities as well. Some schools have a LOT more kids that we do, and others have A LOT less! We learned about famous landmarks in different parts of our countries as well. Schools included photos, hand drawn pictures and more. I am so grateful that your organization creates a place for people to participate and make a difference in children's lives.\r\n\r\nAs always, Donors Choose, we hit a slam dunk (or maybe a Michelin Star) this time! My Pre-K students are absolutely thrilled with our Measure, Mix, and Munch project and activities. The excitement started when the boxes arrived. As we opened each one, the oohs and ahhs poured out. The kids immediately made connections between the new cooking tools and those they use in their kitchen and drama centers.\r\n\r\nOur cooking lessons are varied and teach life and academic skills. Students learn about safety, hygiene, healthy choices, following directions, taking turns, sharing, measuring, reading (recipes), using kitchen utensils and appliances, and, of course, the love of cooking and eating with others.\r\n\r\nWhat We Measured, Mixed, and Munched:\r\nWe started off simply, letting the kids get acquainted with real kitchen tools.\r\n\r\nSlime (For playing, not eating!) Great for fine motor skills.\r\nStudents learned to use measuring spoons, cups, and bowls.\r\n\r\nThen we moved on to hot kitchen appliances.\r\n\r\nWagon wheel pasta with student-made butter (For eating, but not the healthiest choice!)\r\nConnected to the Wheels curriculum.\r\nStudents watched as teachers used the electric burner and stock pot.\r\nStudents assisted by serving pasta with spoons and bowls.\r\nThe measuring cups were used to measure the heavy cream for butter.\r\nStudents took turns shaking the container by counting to 20.\r\n\r\nNext, we moved on to a more complex recipe, using a hands-on appliance and more tools.\r\n\r\nStrawberry-Banana Smoothies - (A delicious and healthy treat!)\r\nStudents became experts at measuring accurately with measuring spoons and cups. They learned to use a blender, spatula, and safety knife. We had to make a second batch because it was so good.
