My Students

I teach English Language Arts to a fantastic bunch of 6th graders in an ethnically diverse, economically disadvantaged neighborhood in New York. My kids range from 3rd grade reading levels, to ELL students, to students who read on an 11th grade level. They are great kids and they love to learn.

Many of my kids work hard all year round.

They diligently do their homework, classwork and projects. They get great grades to show for it, but wouldn't it be nice if they also got some material reward? Sometimes I feel that the kids who do the right thing don't get the recognition they deserve. My kids are so eager and put so much effort into their work, that I want to reward those efforts."

My Project

I would like to have book and art prizes for the students who complete the best work in each class. The students who showed the most comprehension and the most effort in class discussions, on class projects and homework, and on content tests will each get to choose a prize. Also any child who gets an 80% or higher would get a chance in a lottery to win one of these fantastic prizes as well. I have chosen some real crowd pleasers: books in the Twilight series, diaries, colored pencils, flash drives, and slumber party books. All of my students will be dying to win one of these great prizes and will be envious of the students who do walk away with the prize. This will provide extra motivation to excel and do the best they can.

Your generosity will show my students that being smart is awesome.
