TV speaks to everyone, especially children. I teach English to a fantastic group of 6th graders in Brooklyn. The vast majority of my students are either immigrants of he children of immigrants. Their reading levels are at least 1-2 grades below reading level.

Almost all of my students struggle with reading, and many of them look like they'd rather poke out their eyes than read our class books. I have tried to pick out books that interest the kids, and that has helped somewhat, but not everyone is motivated to crack open the book and get lost in the pages.

Many of the books we read have been made into movies or documentaries , like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Koko's Kitten", and Jane Goodall's autobiography. The added incentive of being able to watch the film version of the books they read will definitely entice my most reluctant readers to finish their assignments. Movie days are always very popular, and even the most reluctant workers scramble to get the work done, so they can watch too. I plan to implement a book/movie unit into my lessons. Throughout the year as the students finish a book, they will write a review of it. Then they will watch the movie version and compare the two. At the end of the year we will have our own Academy Awards with the class voting on the film adaptation. We'll celebrate, of course, by watching a movie.

Your generosity will enable all of students to enjoy the written word. The promise of watching movies will make reading the books a task to be completed instead of avoided. Hopefully, they'll realize that books aren't as boring as they thought and in the future they'll read the book after seeing the movie.
