Who doesn't love getting scared? Kids always love horror movies and what better way to get them interested in reading than by introducing them to three of the greatest horror stories ever written? Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have kept their power to fascinate and horrify over 100 years. My class in located in the inner city of Brooklyn, pretty scary in itself. My students are not that into reading, but they love movies and scary ones always top their list. I have devised a unit of study in which my students will read these three classic tales of terror and then watch movie versions of them. They will write reviews after reading the books, but before seeing the movies. Then they will watch the movies and compare the written word to the filmed version. They will make informed judgments on which they prefer, and analyze why movies change story lines. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and offer a great bunch of kids a terrifying way to get interested in reading!
