My Students

Don't you just hate it when everyone else in on the same page and you're not sure what's going on?

I teach 6th grade English Language Arts to a great group of ethnically diverse, economically disadvantaged kids in NYC.

My homeroom is ELL/Resource Room. That means every kid in my class is an English Language Learner, has a learning disability or both. Most of them are reading on a 4th-5th grade level. They struggle everyday to catch up and learn the skills they need to know to do well in school.

My Project

These books are a great way to help my struggling readers build essential reading skills and catch up to their peers. The books are divided into three groups: Books for Boys, Books for Girls, and for my really low level readers: 4th Grade level books. Now groups of three kids can read together or independently to build fluency and expression. They can work together on questions to build comprehension and language skills. As they master these books they can advance to higher level books and join their peers in reading and completing a 6th grade level book.

Your kindness will help a great group of kids that were dealt a tough hand.

School is hard enough as it is without the added pressure of having to learn in a new language or having difficulty learning in a traditional manner. These books are a step up to a better education.
