My students need 30 different art supplies like construction paper, crayons, colored pencils, glue and scissors.

Art feeds the soul. I think most people would agree with that. I teach Social Studies to a great group of 6th graders in NYC. The vast majority of my students are immigrants or the children of immigrants and have very few opportunities to integrate art into their daily lives.

Unfortunately, my school is facing a 1.3 million dollar budget cut this year. And of course, art is one of the first subjects to go. On top of that, there is no money to buy basic art supplies for teachers to use in the classroom.

These resources will enable my students to respond to the S.S. curriculum through the medium of art. S.S. at best is a hard subject to learn because it requires a lot of reading, at worst kids are bored to death by it. By combining art and the standard curriculum, I hope to engage my students to love history as much as I do. I plan to have my students create their own artifacts from the different cultures we study, build pyramids, create kites, construct armor, and many other fun activities to tie to our units of study.
