Before heading to the lake, students sketched a scene on the wood cookie slabs. Having the stencils available made all students feel successful. \"Can we do two?\" I recall them asking.\r\n\r\nOn the day of our field trip they were elated to be able to sit down and paint. The acrylic paint pens worked slick! They liked the option of being able to use either the thin or thicker end. I loved the no mess! My favorite part of field trips is watching new friendships blossom. Students need to feel like they belong. Providing opportunities like this craft activity allows the opportunity for them to reach out. \r\n\r\nWithout a doubt, this craft activity was one of the best parts of the day. With our early November snow this year the materials got lots of use right away. One of our favorite winter projects this year has been building a quinzhee, a snow cave shelter of Athabascan origin (Indigenous people of Northern CA/AK). The new socks and mittens helped keep fingers and toes warm as we built. After the quinzhee was completed we were able to all pile inside and tell stories. It was a very memorable community building experience for all! \r\n\r\nThis week we have an all day winter hike planned at a local nature conservancy property and I know both the mittens and socks will be very much appreciated. It is nice to be able to carry extras of both in our backpacks for when student's mittens or socks get wet along the way.
