A few years ago, I attended a conference for progressive educators and a sectional on daily walking. The presenters were a university professor and his wife who taught elementary school. He shared the research about the physical and psychological benefits of walking. She shared the reality of the many, many positive changes she saw in her classroom. I returned to Green Bay, WI and hit the sidewalk with my third and fourth grade class.\r\n\r\nIn the beginning, we struggled to stay together as a group, stay safe in the road, and agree on the benefits of the walk. As we soldiered on, the kids began to look forward to the walks and stopped complaining about the weather. They (and their parents) also began to see the benefits of physical exercise during the school day. We always held a community circle each morning and began taking our \"question of the day\" to the sidewalk. Now it is a walk-and-talk. Even with all of this positive benefit, we still struggled with the pace and continuity of the group while walking.\r\n\r\nThe day the pedometers arrived the kids were SO EXCITED! We headed outside for our second walk of the day. Since their arrival, we have walked many afternoons (in addition to our regular morning walk) to increase our steps each day. We have also begun to mathematically calculate the the number of steps and convert them to the number of miles walked. This has made the class want to walk even more often!\r\n\r\nThe pedometers have increased our enthusiasm for walking, quickened our walking pace, and provided the ability to monitor our daily exercise. It has literally and figuratively put a spring in our steps! And we couldn't have done it without your GENEROUS donation!","fullyFundedDate":1757290817130,"projectUrl":"project/the-walking-classroom/9664204/","projectTitle":"The Walking Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Denise","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10232186"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36932","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":549,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":65,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":83.3,"schoolId":36932,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Aldo Leopold Community School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Aldo Leopold Community School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/green-bay-area-public-school-district/aldo-leopold-school/36932"}
