And German 1, no less! \r\n\r\nEvery day for the past 3.5 weeks, students have arrived to class and immediately picked up \"their\" shared copy of the book \"Neue Schule, neue Freunde\" (\"New School, New Friends\"). From there, we have read the chapter aloud, done Reader's Theater, read with partners and groups, and discussed our thoughts about the book. \r\n\r\nStudents in German 1 (their very first year of German!) are following a narrative about a complicated love triangle at a Berlin high school, and theorizing what plot twists and turns are yet to come. Will Anton and Heidi end up together? Will Lena ruin their nascent love? Will Heidi hire her fellow student, Frank, to fight everyone else with a bow and arrow? (You'll see that prediction played out on the worksheet I photographed.)\r\n\r\nWe have talked about different aspects of culture and geography, and German now feels so very real to my first year students. We have even learned some vocabulary that will be very useful for the students traveling with me this summer to Munich and Berlin (which is the setting for the story!). Talk about bringing a story and language to life!\r\n\r\nWhile other language classes across the country have toiled over vocabulary and conjugation in preparation for final exams, we have been laughing, discussing, and continuing to grow in our German.
