Last spring, a group of students approached me with the idea of creating a book club—a space to discuss novels outside the school day while building community and empathy. During our first few meetings, we shared the books that brought us personal joy, and it quickly became clear that our members wanted more for the club to thrive. Together, we created a list of books to read collectively. By the end of the 2024–2025 school year, we selected The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. \r\n\r\nThe Book Thief is a World War II Historical Fiction novel about Liesel Meminger, a young girl who finds solace in books during the war. The story follows her journey as she learns to read and discovers the power of words amid loss and hardship. Historical fiction can be a tough sell for students, so I was thrilled when they chose this novel. We're reading it over several weeks, meeting twice a month to discuss assigned chapters. Student leaders have taken ownership by creating discussion questions and interactive games such as Kahoot to make meetings engaging and fun. My heart grew when one student said, \"I would have never picked up this book if it was in the library. I usually don't read this genre unless it's assigned, but I'm really enjoying it.\" We expect to finish this novel in mid-December. \r\n\r\nIn January, we'll begin All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. This realistic fiction novel follows two Pakistani American friends, Noor and Sal, whose lives are upended by family tragedy, debt, and difficult choices. Told from alternating perspectives, it explores themes of friendship, grief, identity, racism, and the challenges of the American Dream for immigrant families. I'm eager for our students to experience this powerful story and connect its themes to their own lives. \r\n\r\nOne of the greatest challenges in running our book club has been securing funding. I want our students to have meaningful experiences and access to high-quality books. When I told them I was using Donors Choose to support the project, they were deeply appreciative of the generosity of those who believed in their vision. We are especially thankful to the Bezos Family Foundation and the Donors Choose community for matching donations and making this project possible.","fullyFundedDate":1755745216771,"projectUrl":"project/creating-empathy-through-books-and-teens/9426512/","projectTitle":"Creating Empathy Through Books and Teens","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wilson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10061073_orig.jpg?crop=140,140,x35,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750526594229","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10061073"},{"teacherId":1046889,"projectId":9621912,"letterContent":"Thank you much for all your donations. I teach upper classmen who are in Algebra 1. Some of them are taking Algebra 1 for the third year in a row. Needless to say, keeping them engaged and feeling like they are capable is a consistent challenge. Having decent supplies for doing their work makes a difference. \r\nI just finished talking with all of them about taking care of the materials, not drawing on the calculators or scratching them up. I told them I've been teaching for 18 years, every year I buy a couple (then I stopped for a few years because I was teaching a different class that needed them) and all the other calculators are in good shape. I don't want them to have to have \"trashed\" materials. But I did not have enough for the 33 students that I have in each class. So your gift makes it so that every student in here can have access to decent equipment. When I told students it was important to me that they didn't have trashed materials, I wish you could have seen the look on their faces. It was like they understood the respect I was affording them. I believe this goes a long way to being able to teach them. \r\nSo, again, thank you so much. I also have to say, it was amazing to see this get funded so quickly.
