No longer do students have to try and focus on listening to the audio prompts on their iPad while trying to ignore the audio prompts coming out of others' iPads. \r\n\r\nThis is especially important in K-2 as many of us still use a lot of audio prompts since we are still building our reading skills. In later grades, we will be able to read our own prompts, but right now this is a huge boon to us by allowing us to use the adaptive apps to personalize instruction without the confusion of hearing others' similar audio prompts in the background, which you can imagine can be distracting.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the headphones allowed us one of the smoothest standardized testing environments that we have had in a while. This is compared to years previous when we had to set up many rotations to utilize a limited number of headphones. As I spoke with another teacher while we reflected on standardized testing together, they shared, \"It was so nice. This year, my students and I did not have to worry about having enough headphones for MAP thanks to the Donor's Choose headphones donations. Thanks for setting it up!\"\r\n\r\nThis is also the gift that keeps on giving as we will be a bit ahead of the game for next year. A few units will undoubtedly need replacement, but many will survive for the next school year as well! Classroom percussion instruments have been a key aspect of our elementary music classroom this year. When used as a large group, they create an orchestra. In smaller formations, they became accompaniment for storytelling and movement. These instruments allow a unity with music, movement, dance, and speech. All 485 students use our bells, sand blocks, triangles and more multiple times a week. Learners used these instruments for improvisation, singing games, accompaniment patterns, melodic practice, composition, and individual/ensemble performing. \r\n\r\nStudents had multiple opportunities to play, create, and perform on the new instruments. Our roller skates are being used for PE and Music collaboration in units for all grade levels. \r\n\r\nWe were able to combine your generous donation with a grant from our PTA for helmets of various sizes so now everyone can skate. The KG students were a little timid at first, but they quickly became fearless. The soft elbow and wrist pads you donated made all the difference. Students that had their own skates were allowed to bring them as well. We hosted a PTA family engagement night on roller skates, and it was just like SKATE KING! The combination of music, movement, and dance is great for community building. We strive, at our school, to encourage a growth mindset. It is also important to see our students try and then fail and then try again. For some of our students, the idea of being on wheels was not conceivable until they came to class on that day. Having brand new skates especially in their sizes is worth so much. \r\n\r\nThe roller skates are great teaching tools on Family Day – when we invite all families to come learn with our students. Students have had multiple opportunities to play, create, and perform with our new skates. \r\n\r\nDonor's Choose has become a vital part of our school. As PE and Music teachers, we have found wonderful opportunities to work together. A second DC project was for small basketballs. We host a program called Nutcracker Basketball for the whole school in December and invite the basketball teams from our feeder high schools to come and support our students. The bigger balls were hard for small hand and the DC universe stepped up. It is only through the kindness of donations that some of the magic that we do can happen. We appreciate the generosity.
