One of the most powerful moments was during our integrated art and literacy project. Students created their own piñatas and designed unique luchador masks. Using these creations as inspiration, they wrote opinion-based narratives where they connected their ideas to the pillars of Black Lives Matter while also exploring the cultural significance of Mexican lucha libre. This project allowed them to express themselves creatively while making deep cultural and academic connections. Additionally, the materials have supported math centers, where students use manipulatives to better understand concepts in a concrete and engaging way. Yo lucho por...\r\n\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. Many of them had never had access to these kinds of art supplies before, and they were eager to start creating right away. It truly set a positive tone and increased their motivation to participate and do their best.\r\n\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue building on these experiences by deepening the connection between art, literacy, and cultural identity. They will expand their writing by revising and publishing their narratives, as well as sharing their work with classmates to build confidence and communication skills. In math, they will continue using manipulatives to solve more complex problems and explain their thinking.
