Reading in our group includes independent reading time, partner conversations, team discussions, and trivia-style practice questions. Students are learning to return to the text for evidence, explain their thinking, and listen respectfully to different ideas.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who may not always choose to read independently have become especially engaged because Battle of the Books makes reading social, exciting, and purposeful. I was moved to a new grade level, but passed the equipment along to the 4th grade teachers to use with their students this year. From my new room, I am able to see the field that they play in. So although I am not there with them, I can still see them having fun and enjoying their time with their friends. It's so nice to see kids being kids and outside playing. Many of them spend their time behind screens., so it is important to me that they have things to play with during their free time. \r\n\r\nRecess is such a great way for them to build friendships, work on problem solving and teamwork, and burn off some of that energy! Watching them try new things or take games they did in PE and bring them outside on their own is a really awesome experience. This year I am starting a whole new journey and teaching 6th grade English. That means I needed to revamp how I was going to do my supplies and storage. Normally, I give each of my students whatever supplies they are missing so they can start the year off ready. However, this year, I have nearly 75 students. So I needed a better way to get them supplied and prepared. \r\n\r\nI was able to provide most of them with the extra pieces they were missing, like glue or crayons. Then I created supply pouches with a set of supplies in each. These are hung up in my room in an organizer, which is numbered 1-24. Then each student in each class has a number 1-24 that they are assigned to. That number is the number they use for all supplies in the room, including Chromebooks, headphones, and supply pouches. If they need something in class one day that they don't have, they just go grab the pouch from their number spot and then return it when they are finished.\r\n\r\nThis was really helpful that first week of school, because many students don't come in that week with supplies. They didn't have to sit out, borrow, or feel embarrassed that they didn't have what they needed. They could easily grab a bag and get to work.\r\n\r\nBy assigning the students a specific number, it helps me keep track of the materials and make sure things are being returned. Then at the beginning of this year, they were perfect for students who didn't have their supplies yet. \r\n\r\nI have little baskets that I can put a set of them into and pass out to those who need them or to each pair/group. The students have gotten really good at keeping track of them and returning them to the box. When I was trying to keep up with the individual boxes, they were constantly breaking apart and we were losing markers, crayons, and pencils all the time. This system seems to keep things from going missing and lasts much longer. I can keep our computers safe and locked away without risk of anyone taking then out the classroom. \r\nIt also fits many chargers so it can charge many computers at a time. The kids also find the cart easy to use and are learning to match their number in order to safely put their computers back in the chart.
