Today we read, All the Way to the Top and discussed the Americans with Disabilities Act. We looked at ways that our school makes things accessible for all, as well as ways we need to do better to ensure equity for all!\r\n\r\nThen we discussed how not all disabilities are visible and you can't learn about a person and their needs just by looking at them. We talked about how there are many people in our room who have disabilities, but you would never know! Then we shared all of the things we have in our room that help with their individual needs. Some have visuals on their desks, while others have a \"safe spot\" to go when they need it. They have access to Wobble Cushions and noise cancelling headphones, as well as a plethora of sensory tools. I stressed to them that these aren't things that all students have access to in our school and that sometimes in order for people to get what they need, others have to advocate for them and help them.\r\n\r\nSo, we got to work! First, we gave our \"tubs\" a name. Next, we created a letter to put in each tub that explains what it is and its purpose. Each student hand wrote a note to put in the tubs. After that, we created an assembly line and the students filled the tubs with all of the items! It was really cute watching them pick out the perfect mix of colors!\r\n\r\nWhen they were all finished and put together, the students went in teams to each of the classrooms in first grade their Regulation Stations! They were beaming with excitement to spread a little joy to another class.\r\n\r\nOur next goal is to continue to work until we are able to get materials needed for making stations for every classroom in the school.
