I changed up the way I wanted to use these for behavior management. The little critters are mostly used as a reward for students who clean out their cubbies. My students are expected to take everything out of their cubbies when they pack up each day. There are many students who do not take everything home. Two days a week (random each week) I put a little critter in the corner of the students who cleaned out their cubby that day. They love them! They keep them in the little baggies and enjoy collecting them. Reading in our group includes independent reading time, partner conversations, team discussions, and trivia-style practice questions. Students are learning to return to the text for evidence, explain their thinking, and listen respectfully to different ideas.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who may not always choose to read independently have become especially engaged because Battle of the Books makes reading social, exciting, and purposeful. Next, students will continue reading the shared titles, creating questions for one another, and practicing as a team in preparation for the district competition.
