Because of you, children in our school now have access to authentic, engaging books that reflect their heritage and introduce others to new perspectives.\r\n\r\nYour support provided titles such as \"Dancing the Tinikling (Own Voices, Own Stories),\" \"Cousins Forever - Magpinsan Magpakailanman: A bilingual book for kids learning Filipino / Tagalog (English-Tagalog edition),\" and \"My Favorite Filipino Foods From A to Z.\" These books are more than just pages and pictures — they are bridges between generations, languages, and lived experiences. For students with Filipino roots, seeing their customs, language, and family traditions represented in high-quality literature helps affirm their identities and fosters pride in who they are. For other students, these stories open doors to understanding, empathy, and curiosity about cultures different from their own.\r\n\r\nAlready, I have seen shy students light up when they recognize foods, dances, or words from their families in the pages we read together. The bilingual structure of \"Cousins Forever\" supports language learners by allowing them to make connections between English and Tagalog, strengthening both comprehension and cultural confidence. \"Dancing the Tinikling\" invites students to imagine and celebrate a traditional Filipino dance, while \"My Favorite Filipino Foods From A to Z\" turns mealtime into a learning moment about flavors, traditions, and the stories behind family recipes. These titles give us opportunities for cross-curricular learning — from language arts and social studies to music and culinary exploration — and they enrich our lessons in meaningful, tangible ways.\r\n\r\nYour generosity also supports social-emotional growth. When students see their lived experiences reflected in books, it validates their voices and makes them feel seen. When classmates read about traditions and foods they've never encountered, it builds empathy and respect. Class discussions have become more vibrant and inclusive as students share personal connections and ask thoughtful questions. The books have sparked family conversations at home as well; children bring stories and new vocabulary back to their parents and grandparents, creating connections between classroom learning and family life.\r\n\r\nBeyond the immediate classroom impact, your contribution strengthens our whole school community by diversifying the library collection and ensuring that our shared spaces reflect the rich cultures represented by our students. This investment in representation helps set a foundation for lifelong readers who appreciate diversity in literature and in life.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous support and for believing in the power of books to celebrate culture, build language skills, and nurture understanding. Your gift has already begun to brighten young minds and hearts, and the ripple effects will be felt for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1765409479483,"projectUrl":"project/celebrating-diversity-with-filipino-book/9881010/","projectTitle":"Celebrating Diversity with Filipino Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hagerty","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3488606_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657669284125","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3488606"},{"teacherId":120549,"projectId":9905428,"letterContent":"Last year when I saw Tonies, I thought they were a great idea, but didn't think they'd be beneficial in a fourth grade classroom. Even my highest readers and those who seem uninterested in just about everything I give them enjoy the stories.\r\n\r\nWhen they saw the Tonies that were on their wish list were actually delivered to our room, they were so happy! It takes a bit to get them downloaded and ready to use in the classroom and I thought they were going to lose their minds waiting. But, the day came and they were finally ready to roll!\r\n\r\nThe Wicked Tonie was hands down their favorite one in the project. I couldn't believe how many of them were interested in it. My favorite is the Nature Sounds Nap Time, which is soothing sounds that I pop on during our independent time or groups. Today we read, All the Way to the Top and discussed the Americans with Disabilities Act. We looked at ways that our school makes things accessible for all, as well as ways we need to do better to ensure equity for all!\r\n\r\nThen we discussed how not all disabilities are visible and you can't learn about a person and their needs just by looking at them. We talked about how there are many people in our room who have disabilities, but you would never know! Then we shared all of the things we have in our room that help with their individual needs. Some have visuals on their desks, while others have a \"safe spot\" to go when they need it. They have access to Wobble Cushions and noise cancelling headphones, as well as a plethora of sensory tools. I stressed to them that these aren't things that all students have access to in our school and that sometimes in order for people to get what they need, others have to advocate for them and help them.\r\n\r\nSo, we got to work! First, we gave our \"tubs\" a name. Next, we created a letter to put in each tub that explains what it is and its purpose. Each student hand wrote a note to put in the tubs. After that, we created an assembly line and the students filled the tubs with all of the items! It was really cute watching them pick out the perfect mix of colors!\r\n\r\nWhen they were all finished and put together, the students went in teams to each of the classrooms in Pre-K for their Regulation Stations! They were beaming with excitement to spread a little joy to another class.\r\n\r\nBy the end of the day, each of the teachers reached out and let me know that they had already started using their bins, which made my heart happy! I am hopeful that these bins will help the learning environment all year.\r\n\r\nOur next goal is to continue to work until we are able to get materials needed for making stations for every classroom in the school.
