We looked at ways that our school makes things accessible for all, as well as ways we need to do better to ensure equity for all!\r\n\r\nThen we discussed how not all disabilities are visible and you can't learn about a person and their needs just by looking at them. We talked about how there are many people in our room who have disabilities, but you would never know! Then we shared all of the things we have in our room that help with their individual needs. Some have visuals on their desks, while others have a \"safe spot\" to go when they need it. They have access to Wobble Cushions and noise cancelling headphones, as well as a plethora of sensory tools. I stressed to them that these aren't things that all students have access to in our school and that sometimes in order for people to get what they need, others have to advocate for them and help them.\r\n\r\nSo, we got to work! First, we gave our \"tubs\" a name. Next, we created a letter to put in each tub that explains what it is and its purpose. Each student hand wrote a note to put in the tubs. We have spent a lot of time this year focusing on kindness, empathy, and being aware of our own selves. When I tell you they were excited about this lesson, I am not kidding! These were the biggest canvases that I have used and they were PERFECT! I had them go online and find photos, quotes, or things that they wanted to paint that expressed kindness. Then once they had their ideas, they went to work. I loved watching their creative process. Some were watching YouTube videos on how to draw hands and a cat, others were just diving right in with their paint markers. Regardless of the method to their madness, the outcome was perfect! \r\n\r\nThen, we put the double sided tape on the back and hung them all around the school. Our building is large, so we were able to find a spot for each of their paintings. When we walk by them, it is so cute to hear their little whispers of excitement when they see theirs. Several staff members have commented on how nice they look around the school. \r\n\r\nI couldn't think of a better way to spend World Kindness Day than by sprinkling a little kindness around our school for all to enjoy!","fullyFundedDate":1761845997939,"projectUrl":"project/kindness-on-display/9668838/","projectTitle":"Kindness on Display","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kilgore","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp120549_orig.jpg?crop=283,283,x302,y204&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1557790462388","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kellykilgore"},{"teacherId":7640318,"projectId":9434235,"letterContent":"Thank you so very much for your generous donation to my project Movin' and Groovin'!
