The Micro:Bits, iPad styluses, 3D printer filament, and unplugged coding games you funded have allowed me to offer hands-on, cross-curricular STEM experiences that would not have been possible otherwise. These materials support everything from coding and engineering to design and scientific thinking. The iPad styluses, in particular, have been a huge success with my younger students, giving them the precision they need to design in TinkerCad with confidence. Before, students often struggled to control their designs with their fingers, leading to frustration. Now, they're more successful, creative, and proud of their 3D creations—bringing digital ideas to life with our classroom 3D printer.\r\nThe unplugged coding games have brought so much joy and engagement to our classroom. My students already had a basic foundation in coding with robots like Code & Go Mouse, so these screen-free coding boards were a perfect next step. They provide students with the opportunity to practice sequencing, logic, and debugging skills in a fun, tactile, and collaborative way. What I love most is how often I hear students cheering each other on or discussing strategies—showing that they're not only learning, but also working as a team. The addition of Micro:Bits has been equally exciting. We're still early in the process, but the impact is already noticeable. Students who were once hesitant are now fully engaged and eager to learn more. Since introducing Micro:Bits, I've seen improvements in focus, attendance, and classroom behavior. These devices are helping students explore coding while also connecting with science content like circuits, inputs, and outputs.\r\nI recently attended a professional development event focused on using Micro:Bits in the classroom, where I gathered a variety of hands-on activities and instructional strategies. Thanks to your support, I was able to return to my classroom and immediately apply what I learned—something that wouldn't have been possible without access to the right tools. The impact on both teaching and learning has been incredibly rewarding. This project has allowed me to expand my curriculum, meet diverse learning needs, and inspire my students to see themselves as designers, coders, and real-world problem solvers. Many of them have already asked how they can keep designing and coding at home. Your generosity has sparked that excitement, and it's making a lasting impact. In a small rural school like ours, many of our students have limited exposure to advanced technology, so the 3D printer has opened an entirely new world of learning. It's providing a hands-on experience that teaches them about engineering, design, and problem-solving in a way that traditional methods simply cannot. They are learning how to use CAD software to create their own designs, which is a valuable 21st-century skill. The technology allows them to see their ideas take shape in real-time, making abstract concepts come to life in a very engaging and practical way. The printer has made learning more interactive and exciting, helping students build skills that will be useful far beyond the classroom.\r\nWhat excites our students the most is the ability to see their creations come to life before their eyes. The printing process itself is captivating, and they are especially motivated when their designs work as intended, such as during our boat capacity challenge. For many students, this is the first time they've been able to create something tangible from their own designs, and the sense of accomplishment is enormous. The technology has not only sparked their curiosity but also ignited a passion for learning more about how things work. It's motivating them to think critically, be creative, and embrace challenges with a new perspective.\r\nThere are definitely students who have particularly thrived with this new technology. Some students who might have struggled in traditional subjects have found a new passion for learning through the hands-on experience the 3D printer offers. These students are excited to take ownership of their designs, experimenting and refining their work until they get it just right. They're learning that failure is part of the process and are becoming more resilient as they tackle new challenges. Additionally, students who already have an interest in engineering or technology have really warmed to the 3D printer, using it as a platform to explore ideas they might not have been able to pursue otherwise. The 3D printer has truly opened doors for all students, giving them a chance to excel in ways they never imagined.\r\nAt our STEM Family Night, we were thrilled to showcase the 3D printer to our community. It was an incredible opportunity to share this new technology with parents, siblings, and other community members who may not have had the chance to see something like this in action. Everyone was fascinated by the process, eagerly watching as the printer brought designs to life layer by layer. Attendees asked a lot of insightful questions, many curious about how the printer worked and how the designs were translated into physical objects. We were able to explain the technology behind the printer, including how the layered design is created through code, helping them understand the intricate process involved. It was a great way to connect the classroom learning to real-world applications, and many parents left with a deeper appreciation for the role this technology plays in their children's education. It was an exciting and educational experience for everyone involved, and it reinforced the importance of bringing innovative technologies into our school.","fullyFundedDate":1731843302911,"projectUrl":"project/3d-printer-for-teaching-steam/8935264/","projectTitle":"3D Printer for teaching STEAM","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jefferson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9784225_orig.jpg?crop=2481,2481,x0,y256&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753915131444","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9784225"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_33683","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":530,"numTeachers":37,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":32,"percentWhite":51,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"14.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":75.7,"schoolId":33683,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Cumberland Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Cumberland Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/cumberland-county-school-district/cumberland-elementary-school/33683"}
