The new graphic novels are prominent displayed in front of my glowing \"Read\" sign, and they have been very popular. I have some kids who are obsessed with the I Survived books, and this one about Pearl Harbor is excellent. I've had kids request that we read more about World War II. And we will!\r\n\r\nThe best part of the new decor is the Pet Hall of Fame bulletin board, an idea I saw on TikTok. The kids didn't know how to use their school email addresses or how to send attachments. So right there, they learned something important! They love seeing their beloved pets every day. And they are so proud that they bring in students who aren't even in my class to show off the bulletin board. Kids who don't normally talk to each other get into conversations about their dogs in front of it. \r\n\r\nMy favorite part is the black dog with the red eyes. I got an email from a student saying, \"Miss, here is a picture of my dog for the bulletin board.\" He had attached a picture of this obviously fake demon dog. I still printed it and put it up and it has caused a lot of questions and laughter. 😂 \r\n\r\nWe haven't started reading Walk Two Moons yet; we will start in a few weeks. Students are learning to encourage one another, communicate on the field, and work together as a team. What might look like simple building toys, fidgets, art supplies, and calming tools to an adult have become meaningful resources that help students manage big emotions, practice self-regulation, and feel more comfortable asking for support.\r\n\r\nDuring individual and small-group counseling sessions, students use LEGOs and building tiles to create, problem-solve, and talk while their hands are engaged. Some students find it easier to open up about friendship challenges, stress, or difficult emotions while building. Other students choose a stress ball or fidget when they are feeling overwhelmed or having trouble concentrating. These tools give students a positive way to manage sensory needs while remaining engaged in conversations and activities.\r\n\r\nThe origami paper and drawing supplies have also created opportunities for students to express feelings that can sometimes be difficult to put into words. A student may begin by simply drawing or folding paper and gradually become comfortable enough to share what is happening in their life. These quiet activities help make counseling feel less intimidating and give students a safe outlet for creativity and self-expression.\r\n\r\nThe LED lights have helped transform the counseling environment into a space that feels calm, welcoming, and different from the busy school day. Students notice the atmosphere and often recognize that this is a place where they can slow down, breathe, and be themselves.\r\n\r\nAs we continue using these resources, students will be learning and practicing specific coping strategies they can use both inside and outside of school. We will continue working on identifying emotions, recognizing personal stress signals, practicing calming techniques, developing positive self-talk, and building healthy problem-solving skills. Students will also use the alarm clocks and other routine-building tools to strengthen time-management and independence skills.\r\n\r\nMy hope is that every student who enters this space discovers at least one strategy or tool that works for them. The students started by gathering germs and bacteria off of commonly touched surfaces. They grew the bacteria for 5 days and then observed their results. The bacteria growth is pretty spectacular. \r\n\r\nThe students were then taught the importance of hand washing, hand sanitation, and not touching their faces. I include several cooking activities in my classroom throughout the school year, so having clean hands around food is super important. The students then made pancakes as a simple exercise in hand washing and kitchen safety. \r\n\r\nThe students loved the cooking activity and very much enjoyed eating the pancakes they cooked.
