I have a few students who used to really struggle to settle down during independent reading. The entire student body was delighted to be involved, as they came class by class during their STEM specialist rotation. We mixed the dough with four simple ingredients and then mathematically partitioned it according to the class size. Each student then rolled the chunk of dough into a ball and flattened it on the press into a nice round tortilla. Once these had cooked and cooled the students were able to eat them as we talked a bit about Hispanic Heritage Month. This cooking project effectively involved all five senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. The students thrilled with the accessibility of this task and their sense of delight and satisfaction. This is evident in the words of members of our educational community. \r\n\r\nStudent 1: While peeling away the deli paper from the ball of dough pressed into a tortilla, exclaims, \"This is sooo satistfying!\" \r\n\r\nStudent 2: \"Yeah! It's like the paper on cheese.\" \r\n\r\nParent: \"Was it homemade corn tortillas that you made last week? My son really enjoys all of the things you're doing in STEM and wants to do them again at home.\"\r\n\r\nClassroom teacher, coming to pick up students from STEM: \"Wow, this is so much fun that you get to cook! (I let them lay on it for our 1 minute calming break and they were in kindergarten heaven!). Having a distinct butterfly for each child really helped them remember their spots better, reducing transition time and disagreements between students. We also talked about how to take responsibility for our new rug by wiping our shoes off before we came inside to keep it clean, sitting on it respectfully, and making sure we cleaned trash and scraps off our floor each day. This rug was truly needed. Students are using it to act out familiar experiences from home while also learning how to work together, share materials, and care for their classroom community. As we continue using the kitchen, I plan to build lessons around it by having students create menus, write grocery lists, practice counting and sorting food, and use pretend money in our classroom store.
