When the students first saw the boxes of fidgets, stress toys, and the colorful tents, the room was filled with audible gasps! \r\nMy 28 students come from diverse backgrounds and carry different levels of daily stress; seeing these items made them feel truly seen and supported. They immediately gravitated toward the calming tools, and there was a shift in the energy of the room—from frantic to focused.\r\nThe tents will be used at the end of the year for a campout experience. This will entail research, writing, mathematics and so many other curriculum based activities. The students will escape anxiety because of the tent setting environment. The stress toys and fidgets will continue to be used during the entire year and future years.\r\nThank you for all of the support and generosity. We practice asking questions about what we're reading with each book, finding facts or determining the story elements depending on the genre of text, and finding evidence to answer a question about the text. When each child has their own book, doing these activities makes it easier for them!\r\n\r\nWe read a lot in our classroom. It is important for students' eyes to be in text throughout the day. This way they can start to recognize patterns within words AND within sentence structure to help them become more fluent, automatic readers.
