We were able to add many new items, such as plushies, a rocking chair, and fidgets, and the students using the room are really enjoying it. In fact, some students have enjoyed it so much, that we've had to make sure the room is only being used during times of true need. \r\n\r\nSome of the most popular items are the plushy seal, the knot pillow (not pictured), the wobble stools, water easel, and the rocking chair. These items have been a tool to help decrease anxiety, as well as provide a comfortable place to reset before returning to the learning environment. \r\n\r\nThank you again for seeing the importance of this project and being willing to put funds toward it. Biology students had to create a story to describe the function of enzymes in humans. Earth Science are modeling the star cycle by communicating it as a story. \r\n\r\nStudents are excited to engage with the science content in a creative way. Their conversations as they decide on a story line and how to incorporate the vocabulary, and process in an interesting way are fun to hear. The feeling in the class is one of excitement and interest. Watching them work together, laugh, collaborate, and learn is a highlight of my school year. \r\n\r\nPreviously, we did these videos with cell phones. Our district's cell phone policy doesn't allow that any longer. While I can have students create written stories or comic strips, those projects are not as group intensive and do not \"grab\" as many students. Having access to a webcam they can use with their Chromebooks allowed us to make videos again. Video projects are so wonderful, engaging, and help students think critically about our science content and you made it happen. They loved learning about different sciences and technology used by different cultures and ancestors. We painted with watercolors made from plants inspired by the weaving and dying practices of the Maya. We learned how the Mexica selectively bred Teosinte into Maize and were able to process Maize into a healthier product through nixtamalization. They also learned that a vitamin deficiency called Pellagra raged in Europe and the Southeast U.S. when Conquistadors ignored the Mexica wisdom and didn't bring nixtamalization with the corn they imported.
