Our classroom has no exterior windows, and I had been trying to find a way to add plants and nature-quality light to the room for months. When I looked into terrariums, I was initially concerned about the cost. However, thanks to your generosity, our goal was reached. \r\n\r\nThe students loved building the terrarium. They came up with clever ways to spread the various layers of dirt and tried several positions for the decorative driftwood before settling on the perfect corner of the terrarium. They then helped plant succulents in the terrarium and they were able to plant vegetable seeds in cups, which we then placed in the terrarium to grow. We conducted scientific observations of the plants as they grew. This then led students to wonder what else we could grow in our terrarium. They really wanted a class pet. (I had to overrule them there.) However, they did ask to grow mushrooms, now that we had other plants. This we were able to accommodate. We will continue using our terrarium for lessons on plants and nature in the future and it has become a wonderful addition to our classroom. \r\n\r\nBy far, the best part for me as a teacher was seeing their enthusiasm about attending school. They couldn't wait to get in the room and check on their plants. They loved taking turns watering them as well as the succulents currently growing in the terrarium. While none of the students liked radishes or mushrooms, the food we were growing, they all enjoyed watching their seeds come to life (or, in the case of the mushrooms, the fungus growth.) \r\n\r\nThank you, again, for your help in this project. It has benefited the students this year and it will continue to benefit classes in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1771023470732,"projectUrl":"project/room-to-grow/10093023/","projectTitle":"Room to Grow","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bakelar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8000730_orig.png?crop=272,272,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1687102862408","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8000730"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_108674","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":50,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":33,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":64.0,"schoolId":108674,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Youth Educational Support Services- Youth Services on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Youth Educational Support Services- Youth Services","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/utah/granite-school-district/youth-educational-support-services-youth-services/108674"}
