Students gravitate toward it when they are feeling overwhelmed by the work or noise in the classroom. When they have spare time, it is one of the first places they choose to go. They are especially grateful for the pillow. \r\n\r\nBeing able to find books easily also invites my students to read both in their spare time and as part of our daily schedule. Having the bookshelf and the bins for sorting books by unit has helped organize the limited space I have in the classroom as well. Everyone who sees the new bookshelf expresses joy and loves it. \r\n\r\nWe work on reading fluency as part of our daily work, and it is my hope that this calm corner and the easily available books will help my students see reading as a worthwhile use of their time. Additionally, our logic puzzles and games help students see that they can solve problems and that doing so can be fun. Too often, students in my care have display learned helplessness. By teaching them to solve simple, logic puzzles--from hidden pictures and mazes to number-based deductive reasoning--they will learn that they can do hard things, and they will practice skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.
