Students earned tokens for reading books, participating in library programs, completing book reviews, and taking part in literacy activities throughout the year. The prize vending machine gave students a fun, tangible way to celebrate their accomplishments, with rewards such as stickers, bookmarks, school supplies, fidgets, small games, and other student-friendly prizes.\r\n\r\nThe program was especially impactful for reluctant readers. Students who may not have initially been interested in reading had an additional reason to pick up a book, try a new genre, or participate in a library activity. At the same time, our avid readers enjoyed having their reading accomplishments recognized and celebrated. The vending machine quickly became a fun conversation starter and helped make reading more visible throughout our school.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the project helped us create a positive culture around literacy. Students began to see reading as an accomplishment worth celebrating rather than simply another school assignment. For many of our students, manga became a gateway that got them reading—especially students who did not consider themselves \"readers.\" The combination of visual storytelling, engaging characters, and fast-paced plots made manga approachable while still encouraging students to practice important reading skills.\r\n\r\nThese new books helped us reach students who often struggled to find something they wanted to read. Students who were reluctant to pick up a traditional novel frequently browsed the manga shelves, recommended titles to their friends, and returned to the library looking for the next volume in a series. Having current, popular titles available helped build a culture where reading was social, enjoyable, and something students chose to do.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books created lasting opportunities for our students. Students who discovered that reading could be fun were more likely to continue reading, explore new genres, and develop confidence as readers.
