As we explored the books, students learned about different cultures, traditions, challenges, and perspectives while also recognizing pieces of themselves in the stories. They were excited to see characters who looked like them or shared experiences similar to their own. This helped create meaningful conversations and showed students that their cultures and stories deserve to be represented in the books they read.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a time for students to explore, make connections, and simply enjoy a good book. Students are able to choose books that interest them, read independently, share recommendations with classmates, and talk about their favorite characters and moments. Having culturally diverse books has helped make our classroom library more inviting because students have more opportunities to find something that truly catches their attention.\r\n\r\nMy students enjoy reading because these books make reading feel personal and relevant. Instead of seeing reading as just another assignment, they can discover stories that make them laugh, think, ask questions, and learn about themselves and others. Seeing their excitement when they find a book they connect with reminds me how important representation is in building confident, enthusiastic readers.
