We work on foundational skills such as decoding unfamiliar words, recognizing common spelling patterns, reading high-frequency words automatically, building fluency, and improving comprehension. As students become stronger readers, we also focus on vocabulary, making connections within a text, and discussing what they have read.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is very hands-on and highly structured. Students receive explicit instruction in phonics and word-reading skills, practice those skills in isolation, and then apply them while reading connected text. The new books give students an important opportunity to see that the skills we practice during intervention have a real purpose: helping them become independent readers.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of adding new books to our classroom has been seeing students become more interested in choosing books for themselves. Many of my students have experienced years of frustration with reading, so finding a book that feels both interesting and manageable can make a significant difference in their willingness to read. Students enjoy having choices and discovering books they can read with increasing confidence. The new bookshelves have helped us create a classroom library that is organized, accessible, and inviting for my students. When the shelves were set up, the students were excited to see that our books finally had their own special place. They immediately wanted to explore the shelves, look through the different books, and find ones they wanted to read.\r\n\r\nWe use our classroom library throughout the school day, especially during independent reading. Students can now easily browse the shelves, choose a book that interests them, and return it when they are finished. For my bilingual students, having books visible and within reach gives them more opportunities to read, discover new vocabulary, strengthen their comprehension, and build confidence in their language and literacy skills. The shelves are also helping them learn responsibility as they take ownership of keeping our classroom library organized and caring for our books.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through third grade, we will use our classroom library to support the reading and language skills we are developing in our lessons. My students will continue exploring different types of books, practicing independent reading, and sharing what they discover with their classmates.
