Having access to dictionaries will benefit my students in many ways. Being English Language Learners and students from economically disadvantaged homes, they do not have a very extensive vocabulary. Many times during our reading, we encounter words that the students do not know. Using the limited dictionaries we have in the class has proven to them that they are capable of more than they ever thought. Before they began using the dictionaries they just thought they didn't understand and that was that. They now realize they can make sense of their reading, and they have control of their knowledge. Having access to a dictionary would greatly improve their comprehension, vocabulary, and self-esteem. They can not control their situation, but now being able to look up words and know what different words mean has given them power and hunger to succeed.
