We've been using them during activities like cornhole, basketball, and tug-of-war to build not just physical skills, but teamwork, communication, and confidence.\r\n\r\nIn cornhole, students are working on hand-eye coordination, focus, and friendly competition. In basketball, they're developing teamwork, movement, and decision-making. Tug-of-war has been one of the biggest highlights—it really teaches students about effort, teamwork, and perseverance. One of the best moments was watching a group of students who don't usually work together come together, communicate, and win as a team. That moment showed real growth beyond just physical activity.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and immediately engaged. There was a lot of energy, smiles, and even some disbelief that they got to use new equipment. Many of them couldn't wait to try everything out, and it created an instant boost in participation—especially from students who are usually more hesitant.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are building on this by creating structured lessons that combine skill development with teamwork challenges. Students will continue improving their coordination and fitness, but also focus on leadership, communication, and sportsmanship. After a long, high-energy session of running, playing, and giving it their all, they were exhausted, sweaty, and ready for a break. When I brought the Powerade out, they got so pumped—some of them were cheering and saying how much they needed it after working so hard. It was great to see how excited they were and how quickly it lifted their spirits. The drinks helped them cool down, rehydrate, and get some energy back after being outside for so long. It also gave us a moment to slow down, regroup, and talk about why hydration and recovery are important after physical activity. For the kids, it felt like a reward for their effort and hard work, and it showed them that I noticed how much energy they had put into the activities. Ending our afterschool program that way left everyone feeling positive, appreciated, and proud of the hard work they had done.
