In my classroom library, students can select books from a small selection of old, damaged texts. Often times, these texts have dated concepts or include characters that are not representative of the students in my class. I worry that these uninteresting and irrelevant texts are detouring my students from reading. By creating a Diversity Library, where students can read texts with characters who look like them and have similar lived experiences, my students will develop an eagerness and excitement to read. Knowing my students excel in content that connects to their daily lives, updating my classroom library in a way that represents my students' backgrounds will surely help them grow as readers.
