Because of your contribution, my students were able to engage with a powerful and thought-provoking novel that challenged them to think deeply about society, individuality, and the importance of memory and emotion. Throughout our reading, students asked meaningful questions, made connections to their own lives, and explored themes that pushed them beyond surface-level understanding.\r\n\r\nStudents made themselves comfortable around the room and listened to the audio of the book. We love to call this \"coffee-shop\" time where students don't talk to \"strangers\" and work and listen independently in their own comfortable part of the room. \r\n\r\nOne of the most impactful parts of this experience was the creative one-pager project students completed at the end of the unit. They incorporated visuals, quotes, and personal reflections to demonstrate their understanding of the novel. Many students included photos and drawings to represent key moments and themes, along with thoughtful personal connections about freedom, choices, and what it means to be human. It was incredible to see their creativity and critical thinking come together in such a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nStudents also used their imagination and understanding of the protagonist to \"complete the book\" and write another chapter to the book. This helped them keep a plot moving and explore what decision they think Jonas would have made as he escaped the community. \r\n\r\nYour support made this experience possible, and it truly made a difference in how my students connected with literature. They didn't just read a bookâthey experienced it, reflected on it, and expressed their learning in authentic and creative ways. Using colored paper and pencils to color-code regions or build 3D organizers allows students to physically manipulate the information they are learning. This hands-on process has completely changed their relationship with their notes. One student recently shared that they find it much easier to stay engaged because they finally have 'a version of their book that they created' themselves. \r\n\r\nBeyond the initial creation, these materials are building lifelong study habits.
