In my classroom, I have 45 minutes to get a lesson taught, check in old books, and check out new books. The last 15 minutes of every class turns into a horse race as we try to get the check-in/out line running at top speed. The students are panicked and aren't getting time to search for new books the way they would like to, and I am not able to help them search the way I would like to. In the end, the same few books are getting checked out over and over because the students know that they like them, and some amazing new literature is left sitting on the shelf because the students don't even have time to look at it before they have to leave.
My project is designed to set up a mobile circulation desk, so that students can simply scan their books at the door to check them in as they enter and so that I can check their books out as we browse.
Students love to feel independent. The idea of scanning their own books back into the system will please them to no end. And with the new system, I will be able to help check out books no matter where I am working at the time—freeing me to help students search for their best fit books as we go through the day. This can free our time in class to feel more relaxed and enjoyable, giving us all the freedom to browse and enjoy new and different books instead of just grabbing "the same old thing."
