Through Mind Your Money by Yanely Espinal and How to Money by Jean Chatzky, students are learning practical lessons about budgeting, saving, investing, understanding credit, managing debt, and making responsible spending decisions. These books help students connect financial concepts to situations they already encounter, such as deciding how to spend money from a part-time job, saving for a car, or preparing for expenses after graduation. Most importantly, students are discovering that the financial choices they make today can influence their opportunities fomorrow.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an interactive experience that connects literacy with real-world financial decision-making. Students read selected chapters independently or with classmates, highlight important financial terms, and discuss how the author's advice applies to their lives. After reading about budgeting, for example, students create sample monthly budgets using realistic teen incomes and expenses, deciding how much to allocate toward savings, necessities, and entertainment. When exploring needs versus wants, students participate in spending challenges that require them to prioritize purchases within a limited budget. Other activities include comparing savings goals, examining the true cost of using credit cards, creating financial goal-setting charts, and responding to real-life money scenarios through short written reflections. These hands-on activities encourage students to move beyond reading about financial responsibility to actually practicing the skills they will need as adults.\r\n\r\nWhat makes these books especially meaningful is their ability to connect with students at different stages of financial awareness. Students who are earning money from part-time jobs can relate to lessons about managing paychecks and avoiding unnecessary spending, while those preparing for college or careers can explore strategies for saving, understanding credit, and becoming financially independent. Even students who may not typically enjoy reading have opportunities to engage through relatable examples, partner discussions, budgeting challenges, and practical problem-solving activities. Your generosity has provided much more than books--you have given my students valuable tools to strengthen their reading comprehension, build financial confidence, and make informed decisions that will benefit them throughout their lives. \r\n\r\nThank you for investing in their futures and helping turn today's readers into tomorrow's financially responsible leaders!","fullyFundedDate":1785267178189,"projectUrl":"project/turning-readers-into-financial-leaders/10390334/","projectTitle":"Turning Readers into Financial Leaders","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Wiley-Thompson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5310411_orig.jpg?crop=560,560,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1579316569925","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-wileythompson"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6895","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1062,"numTeachers":69,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":71,"percentWhite":17,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":44.6,"schoolId":6895,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Crestwood High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Crestwood High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/sumter-school-district/crestwood-high-school/6895"}
